By now you know that December 18th is the deadline for compliance with FMCSA’s electronic logging mandate. But did you know that there are two options that meet these requirements?
According to the FMCSA, any Automatic Onboard Recording Device (AOBRD) adopted before December 18th, 2017 will be “grandfathered” into ELD rule compliance for the next two years. The AOBRD solution tracks hours of service and allows for some edits, and it provides inspectors with exactly what they need – and nothing they don’t.
Cartrack now offers two different ELD mandate-compliant modes within our 1ELD app. Once you connect our electronic logging device to your vehicle, you can choose to either operate in ELD or AOBRD mode – as long as you implement AOBRD before December 18th. Not sure which one to pick? Here’s a quick breakdown of what AOBRDs can and can’t do so you can better decide which mode is right for you!
Driving Time Classification and Edits
When operating in ELD mode, there isn’t much opportunity to make edits to things like driving time classification or drivers. However, in AOBRD mode, you can reclassify driving as Yard Move or Personal Conveyance when needed. Additionally, with ELD mode, drivers can only reassign driving time to co-drivers. When in AOBRD mode, fleet managers can reassign driving time to other drivers at any time.
Data for Inspection
During a roadside inspection, ELDs will provide a file of vehicle data including unidentified driving events. However, in AOBRD mode, unidentified driving events are not included and are therefore not shown during inspections.
Driving Mode Threshold
ELDs will automatically switch into driving mode when vehicle movement is detected over 5mph. However, AOBRDs are not required to switch to driving mode until a vehicle is detected at over 15mph.
Here is a complete comparison of 1AOBRD and 1ELD features.
Cartrack’s FMCSA-certified ELD and AOBRD solutions are quick to install and easy to use. Simply install the ELD device, download our 1ELD app, and then select ELD or AOBRD mode. But remember: If you want to implement AOBRD, you have to do that before December 18th. After that date, ELD is your only choice.
